1.) Both of them are the youngest of the family and considered the “least.”Aeron had been the last and least of the four krakens. (AFFC)
2.) They’ve both failed to gain Balon’s approval.[Balon] was all that an elder brother ought to be, though he had never shown Aeron aught but scorn. (AFFC)
3.) They’ve both been imprisoned. Theon’s imprisonment is obviously a lot more drastic, but it’s still interesting that they have that in common. Some fishermen took him captive and marched him down to Lannisport in chains, and he spent the rest of the war in the bowels of Casterly Rock … (Aeron in AFFC)
4.) Both have gone through identity changes due to the “death” of their former selves. That man is dead. Aeron had drowned and been reborn from the sea, the god’s own prophet. (Aeron in AFFC)"I’m not him, I’m not the turncloak, he died at Winterfell.” (Theon in ADWD)
This last parallel is my favorite one. Aeron was once a drunkard, but after a near-death experience at sea, he became a priest and is now devoted to the Drowned God. Theon committed terrible crimes at Winterfell, then lost his name, discovered himself after breaking free from “Reek,” and now believes that the old gods are real after hearing Bran say his name through the heart tree. I love that Theon and his uncle have a number of things in common, especially since there’s so much discord in the Greyjoy family, and I like to think that Theon and Aeron might understand each other better if they ever meet up again.
I seriously need an entire saga on the Greyjoys, because this family just fascinates me to no end.
